Marvel in talks with Ryan Coogler about Black Panther 2

April 24, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in March, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that this year’s Black Panther will “absolutely” get a sequel, and having delivered the highest-grossing domestic superhero movie of all time and a $1.32 billion worldwide haul, it will come as little surprise to hear that Marvel wants Ryan Coogler back in the director’s chair.

“We definitely want Ryan to come back and that’s actively being worked out right now,” Feige told Collider during an interview to promote this week’s release of Avengers: Infinity War. “When will it be? A lot of it will be when Ryan wants to and not rushing anything, but I think we have an idea of when it will be. But, again, [we’re] not going to announce any post-Avengers 4 movies until hopefully after Avengers 4.”

So, from Marvel’s perspective, it appears that Black Panther 2 is Coogler’s should he decide to return for a second outing. As we’ve seen with Creed, that’s not necessarily a certainty, but one would have to imagine he can pretty much write his own cheque given the huge success of the first movie.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returnsohome to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, John Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Linda.
