Marvel’s Black Widow release delayed indefinitely

March 17, 2020 by Gary Collinson

In news that will come as a surprise to no one, Disney has announced that it has pulled Marvel’s Black Widow from its May release due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Scarlett Johansson-headlined movie was to launch Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 1st, but with more and more cinemas closing their doors around the globe – including AMC and Regal in the United States and Cineworld, Vue and Odeon in the UK – the decision has been made to delay the release of Black Widow indefinitely.

As well as Black Widow, Disney is also pushing back the U.S. dates for The Personal History of David Copperfield (May 8th) and The Woman in the Window (May 15th). The Mouse House had previously announced that Mulan, The New Mutants and Antlers had all been pulled from its schedule.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on May 1st 2020.
