Matt Smith claims that he isn’t actually in Star Wars: Episode IX

March 7, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith has claimed that he isn’t actually in Star Wars: Episode IX.

The bulk of the main cast for Star Wars: Episode IX has been reported for some time now, including returning favourites and new stars. One of these newcomers has been reported by reputable outlets to be former The Crown and Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, however, this might not actually be the case.

The actor himself has denied his involvement in the film during a recent interview with Journalist Emily Zemler: “One takeaway: Matt Smith is not in the next [Star Wars] movie, despite reports to the contrary. He told me, ‘As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not.’ (Although maybe we’ll be surprised by his secret keeping in December.)”

One takeaway: Matt Smith is not in the next #StarWars movie, despite reports to the contrary. He told me, “As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not." (Although maybe we'll be surprised by his secret keeping in December.)

Zemler also added in a follow-up Tweet: “The studio never announced him being in it so it’s totally possible that was just a rumor. But also possible he wasn’t allowed to tell me.”

Of course, it’s possible that Smith is pulling our legs and doing a very good job at keeping his role in the film under wraps or perhaps he’s being perfectly honest and he is actually not involved with Episode IX at all. We will have to wait and see.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release on December 20th 2019 with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Mabeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Keri Russell (The Americans).
