Michael Rooker is open to returning as Yondu for a Disney+ Marvel series

October 27, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Guardians of the Galaxy star Michael Rooker is open to returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the blue-skinned space pirate, Yondu Udonta, in a Disney+ prequel series.

During an interview on the YouTube channel Mama’s Geeky while promoting his upcoming film Love and Monsters, Rooker was asked about returning as Yondu in a Disney+ prequel series, to which the actor responded by claiming he would love to return as the fan-favourite character.

“I will sign onto anything. I’m out of work right now,” Rooker said. “So bring it on, baby, bring it on [laughs]. I’ll sign onto anything. I love the [character]. I really, really, truly enjoyed playing Yondu.”

The role was “beautifully written” and a “very well-rounded character” under writer-director and friend James Gunn, Rooker added. “And of course, of course [I would return].”

Rooker appeared as Yondu Udonta in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where Yondu sacrificed his life to save Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) after the final battle with Quill’s father Ego (Kurt Russell).

While it seems highly unlikely that Yondu will return from the dead following one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be more logical to bring the character back in a prequel TV series or in flashback sequences in the upcoming third movie instalment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, if that’s the direction Marvel would want to take. However, with director James Gunn’s previous comments regarding the resurrection of dead characters, the chance that Yondu will return remains very slim.

Would you like to see Michael Rooker return as Yondu in a Disney+ series or do you think they should leave the character alone following his heartbreaking sacrifice? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter @flickeringmyth…
