Mike Flanagan reveals how The Haunting season 3 could happen

September 15, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Following the release of The Haunting of Bly Manor back in October 2020, the future of the Netflix horror anthology series was unknown as the streaming service announced that there were currently no plans for a third season.

Now, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote his upcoming Netflix limited series Midnight Mass, franchise creator Mike Flanagan explained what it would take for he and his producer partner Trevor Macy to potentially develop another season.

“One of the things that define the Haunting anthology for me is that both of them so far are about updating and riffing on existing classic literature,” Flanagan said. “If the stars align in such a way that we decide to go back into the Haunting world, it would have to be so much on that track that we’ve set up.”

He added, “It would have to be with the right piece of IP, it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to really fit with Bly and Hill House.”

The Haunting of Hill House was inspired by author Shirley Jackson’s gothic horror novel of the same name, while The Haunting of Bly Manor was inspired by The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

While the future of The Haunting… series is currently unknown, Flanagan’s next project Midnight Mass is set to release on Netflix on 24th September. The series follows an isolated island community experiencing miraculous events – and frightening omens – after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. The cast includes Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House), Zach Gilford (The Purge: Anarchy), Hamish Linklater (Legion), and Annabeth Gish (The Haunting of Hill House).
