Minions passes $900 million at the box office

August 10, 2015 by admin

Those little yellow creatures are having an absolute blast at the box office at the moment, as Minions sails past the $900 million mark to become the 7th biggest animated movie of all-time.

The movie added another $7 million from the weekend to push its domestic total to $302, and it has made another $609 million from its overseas markets. Its grand total of $912 million means the movie is on track to clear $1 billion as the movie is still to be released in Slovenia, Italy, Turkey, Greece and – importantly – China. It will also surpass Despicable Me 2, which grossed $970 million worldwide.

When it does (and it will), Minions will be the fourth film this year to clear the $1 billion mark (compared to only one last year) with Avengers: Age of Ultron, Furious 7 and Jurassic World.

Minions is now only $400 million away from passing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the third biggest movie of the year.

Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind… from annihilation.

Minions is out now and features the voice talents of Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Michael Keaton (Birdman), Steve Coogan (Despicable Me 2), Alison Janney (The Way, Way Back), Katy Mixon (Eastbound & Down) and Jennifer Saunders (Shrek 2).
