Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie thinks the Oscars should add a stunts category

November 28, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Christopher McQuarrie, director of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, has suggested that the Oscars should add a stunts category to the awards show.

There has been a fair amount of talk lately regarding new categories for the Oscars, with a ‘popular film’ category not going down very well with pretty much anyone. But what else should be added to give recognition in the industry?

Well, according to Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie, the Academy should look to add an award for stunts – an art that the Misson: Impossible films certainly know something about. Speaking to Collider, he said:

“I can’t think of a film recently that might qualify, but, that’s an art, that’s a skill, that’s a craft. Those are people risking their lives and doing things that are absolutely and utterly truly amazing and are so much a part of an experience like that. Not just in films like this. You go look at Hell or High Water. Lone Survivor. The stunts in that movie were absolutely incredible. In terms of a new category, I think you need to do that.”

What do you think, should a stunts category be added to the Oscars? What films from recent memory do you think would be good contenders for such an award? Let us know in the comments below…
