The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 soars above Horrible Bosses in U.S. Black Friday box office

November 29, 2014 by Alfie Nobes

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has remained at the top of the box office pile for a second weekend in a row, beating off competition from fellow sequals Horrible Bosses 2 and Penguins of Madagascar.  The penultamate feature in the Hunger Games series raked in a whopping $24.1 million this Friday in the US.  It’s also set to top the weekend box office with a cool $56 million if estimates hold out.

Not only has Mockingjay – Part 1 towered above its competition, it has also sealed its place as the third biggest Black Friday earner in history, sitting comfortably behind last years Frozen ($26 million) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($30 million).

Penguins of Madagascar, another film predicted to perform well this Black Friday made a below estimate $10.5 million.  As a whole the Madagascar series has made just shy of $2 billion, with the previous instalment, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, bringing in $216.4 million after an opening weekend of $60 million in the US.

Warner Bros.  Horrible Bosses 2 is also set to fall short of its $30 million weekend target with estimates putting it at $23 million by the end of the holiday weekend. The comedy starring among others Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day and Jennifer Aniston is sitting in fifth place behind figures posted by the lingering Big Hero 6 and Interstellar.
