My Little Pony: The Movie adds Zoe Saldana to its voice cast, new logo released

January 11, 2017 by Justin Cook

Zoe Saldana is the latest actress to join the surprisingly stacked voice cast of Hasbro and Lionsgate’s My Little Pony: The Movie, an animated musical based on the television series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Variety, the outlet that broke the news, didn’t offer up any details as to which character she’ll be playing.

The Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Trek Beyond actress will be joining a cast that brings together a diverse group of actors, including Sia, Liev Schreiber, Emily Blunt, Taye Diggs, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba, Michael Pena and Tara Strong.

The film follows Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity, otherwise known as the “Mane Six,” as they set out on a quest to save their town of Ponyville from a threat, all while making new friends and overcoming challenges.

A new logo for the movie has also hit the web…

Saldana has an insanely busy schedule over the next few years between her roles as Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy series and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (including Avengers: Infinity War), Neytiri in the three upcoming Avatar sequels and Uhura in a fourth Star Trek film, if it does happen.

Lionsgate must be hoping to bring in franchise fans and reach new audiences with the film, but doing the latter might prove to be difficult. While the show and toy line certainly have a following, the name My Little Pony isn’t nearly as appealing to general audience members as other recent animated movies based on franchises, such as The Angry Birds Movie and Trolls.

My Little Pony: The Movie is set for release on October 6th, 2017 and is directed by Jayson Thiessen and written by Meghan McCarthy and Rita Hsiao.
