Netflix CEO says sports coverage could “make sense” for the platform but not right now

September 10, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, has revealed that while sports coverage isn’t going to happen any time soon for the streaming service, it could make sense one day.

Netflix is truly one of the goliaths of the streaming world, dominating much of the current TV and movie landscape with its original content and vast library of entertainment.

Rivals Amazon Prime Video has ventured into the realm of live sports coverage in recent times to go along with its film and TV library, helping it to become even more competitive with both streaming services and traditional TV.

Could Netflix do the same? Could we see live games broadcast on the platform alongside shows like The Witcher? Well, according to CEO Reed Hastings, this isn’t something that is going to happen any time soon but that it could make sense one day.

Speaking to Variety (via ScreenRant), Hastings responded a question about news, sports, and other types of content: “I doubt news, but sports, video gaming, user-generated content — if you think of the other big categories, someday it could make sense. But right now, Ted’s [co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos] got every billion dollar earmarked for bigger movies, bigger series, animation of course… At least for the next couple of years, every content dollar is spoken for.”

So, while we shouldn’t be expecting live sports coverage in the immediate future on Netflix, perhaps one day it could happen. We will have to wait and see.
