Netflix orders sci-fi series Altered Carbon from Laeta Kalogridis

January 22, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Originally published January 22, 2016. Updated April 14, 2018.

Netflix has picked up the sci-fi drama Altered Carbon, which is based upon Richard Morgan’s 2002 cyberpunk novel of the same name and will be written and executive produced by Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Terminator Genisys).

Altered Carbon “is set in the 25th century when the human mind has been digitized and the soul itself is transferable from one body to the next. Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite interstellar warrior known as an Envoy who has been imprisoned for 500 years, is downloaded into a future he’d tried to stop. If he can solve a single murder in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete, he’ll get a chance at a new life on Earth.”

Kalogridis acquired the rights to Morgan’s Takeshi Kovacs book series four years ago, and had written a spec script for a feature adaptation with David H. Goodman before Netflix stepped in for what will now be a ten-episode series.
