Netflix resurrects dumped Disney animation Nimona

April 13, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Animation studio Blue Sky were one of the major casualties of Disney’s high-profile acquisition of 21st Century Fox, and while the Mouse House have continued to churn out content from their successful Ice Age franchise, other projects weren’t so lucky.

One such film was a feature animated adaptation of ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel Nimona, which was years in production and set for a January 2022 release before the takeover left it on the scrapheap, until now.

THR reports that Netflix has stepped in with Annapurna to save the film, which will be directed by Spies in Disguise duo Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, and star Chloe Grace Moretz and Riz Ahmed.

The official Netflix synopsis for Nimoa reads “A knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.”

Moretz will voice the titular Nimona, with Ahmed playing Ballister Boldheart and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin.

Let us know whether you’ve read the award-winning graphic novel, and if you’re excited to finally see Nimona come to the small-screen sometime in 2023 by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
