Netflix sets air dates for several shows, buys True Detective director’s latest film Beasts of No Nation

March 3, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Netflix has announced some big news about its slate of upcoming shows, as well as taking another big step in their outward expansion, having struck a deal to purchase True Detective director Cary Fukanaga’s new film.

In terms of its new show line-up, four big new series will get their debut through the summer: sci-fi show Between will air in May of this year, followed swiftly by the double-whammy of Sense8, the new show from The Matrix creators Lana and Andy Wachowski and Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski, and the hugely-anticipated third season of Orange Is the New Black in June.

Then, on July 17th, the streaming service will unveil Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, the prequel mini-series to the cult 2001 film of the same name, whose stellar cast includes Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Jon Hamm, Chris Pine, Jason Schwartzman, Janeane Garafalo, Lake Bell and David Hyde Pierce, many of whom are reprising their roles from the film.

In addition to the anticipated shows, Variety have reported that Netflix has purchased both the streaming and theatrical distribution of Beasts of No Nation, the new African war-drama from director Fukanaga, starring Idris Elba (Luther), for a reported $12 million. No word on the release date for the film, but reports suggest it could get an Oscar push come awards season this Fall.

The streaming service is also releasing reboots of cult cartoons Inspector Gadget and Danger Mouse in the coming year, and last week released the third season of the award-winning and critically-acclaimed political drama House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.
