Barbarian producers BoulderLight Pictures are set to open the doors to the haunted house franchise Amityville once more with a radical new take on the iconic horror.
Per Deadline’s report they will team with Heart Eyes producers Divide/Conquer to bring the “based-on-a-true-story” tale of terror to a new generation. Joseph and Vanessa Winter, the duo behind 2022 found-footage horror Deadstream are set to direct from their own script.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but this latest iteration is said to ignore the events of the 1979 Margot Kidder and James Brolin ‘classic’, as well as the countless sequels which have followed, and instead focus on the real-life supernatural story that influenced those films, offering a fresh look at the notorious Amityville house itself, which is situated on 112 Ocean Avenue.
The franchise is largely based on the 1977 book, The Amityville Horror by Jay Hanson, which depicts the paranormal events experienced by the Lutz family after they move into a new house in Amityville, New York, a residence once owned by Ronald DeFeo Jr., who killed his entire family in the property. Neither of these events are expected to factor into Joseph and Vanessa Winter’s film.

The last high-profile attempt to resurrect the franchise was with 2005’s Ryan Reynolds-led dud The Amityville Horror, which still grossed over $100 million worldwide on IP recognition alone.
