New trailer for The Mandalorian introduces Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand

November 5, 2019 by Gary Collinson

A week out from its premiere on Disney+, a new TV spot has arrived online for The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm’s upcoming live-action Star Wars show, which offers our first look at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ming-Na Wen’s character – the mercenary Fennec Shand.

“We got our inspiration really from the name. The idea of a fennec fox came to mind,” Wen tells Vanity Fair. “She’s tricky, and yet she’s able to maneuver and survive, and be stealthy—so very graceful and agile. I just love that whole image with the name.”

“It will evolve, it will change. I mean, I think that’s what’s so wonderful about creating a new character,” she continued, discussing the character’s backstory and motivations. “I think she has a good sense of humor about it all as well, which is also fun. You can’t really pinpoint which direction she’s going to go.”

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Natalie Tena (Game of Thrones), Bill Burr (F Is for Family), Mark Boone Junior (Batman Begins), Julia Jones (Westworld) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
