Nicolas Winding Refn moving ahead with Maniac Cop remake

May 17, 2016 by Kieran Fisher

Nicolas Winding Refn has been talking about the prospect of a Maniac Cop remake for years now.  Well, now it looks like it’s finally going ahead.

According to Variety, Vendian Entertainment has teamed up with Wild Bunch and Refn’s Space Rocket on a multi-year first look deal. The slasher Maniac Cop will be the first project produced and financed as part of the collaboration. Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning director John Hyams will take the reigns, with Ed Brubaker writing the script.

It will mark the first instalment of a planned trilogy, just like the original series.  It follows a female cop out to reveal the truth following a string of murders committed by a police unformed serial killer.

The original film is a cult classic starring Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead) and the late Robert Z’Dar (Tango & Cash).  It was directed by legendary exploitation filmmaker William Lustig, who will serve as executive producer here.

Refn himself is excited by the prospect: “I’m extremely excited and honored to be working with such innovative and creative partners as Vendian and Wild Bunch.”

Filming is set to take place this summer.  Stick with Flickering Myth for future updates.  With the team involved with this project, this remake is sure to be one of the good ones.
