Ocean’s 11 reboot with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie to “honor the franchise”

October 11, 2023 by Ricky Church

Fresh off their summer blockbuster Barbie, Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie will soon reunite in a reboot of the Ocean’s 11 franchise. The film will take the series back to its roots by setting it in the 1960s and will “honor the franchise” according to producer Josey McNamara.

In an interview with GamesRadar+ at the BFI London Film Festival, McNamara briefly spoke about their take on Ocean’s 11 and getting such a duo as Gosling and Robbie involved. Not much is known about the film except that it will take place in 1960s Europe during the Monaco Grand Prix and will be part love story and part heist thriller.

“I can’t really say much,” McNamara said, “but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready.” On Gosling and Robbie’s involvement, he added “They’re wonderful together. The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.”

The Ocean’s franchise follows a group of clever thieves robbing casinos and other high risk venues. The original Ocean’s 11 starred Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and other members of the Rat Pack with Steven Soderbergh rebooting the franchise with George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon for three films. Ocean’s Eight was set within Soderbergh’s rebooted universe and follows Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the sister of Clooney’s Danny, in a female-centric heist.

The Ocean’s 11 reboot will be produced by Robbie and McNamara with Jay Roach directing. Roach is best known for the Austin Powers films and his political dramas based on real electoral campaigns like Game Change and Recount. The Ocean’s reboot will be a reunion between him and Robbie after they worked together on 2019’s Bombshell.
