Actor Orlando Jones has lots of hope, and enthusiasm for his upcoming series American Gods, in which he plays Mr. Nancy (aka Anansi) the African trickster god. So much enthusiasm, in fact, that he has likened the world of the upcoming Starz series to that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Jones said: “I really think that all of these characters deserve their own world and planet to come alive in and I’m really hoping that, like the Marvel Universe, that begins to happen — the Gaiman universe — just because these are superheroes that I have a different kind of connection with for whatever reason and I’d just be excited to see them come to life.”
The actor goes on to stress the potential that each character has for their own individual spin-off series: “There are so many other characters in this show that I think can spin into their own worlds where they’re doing their things and also come back into this world. We’ve obviously seen that a lot on Netflix now where there’s Luke Cage and all these characters in Daredevil are all interchanging with each other’s worlds. This seems like an opportunity to do it even more so in a way that’s I think even a tad more authentic because we all were born of a very specific universe. That’s what I hope happens, I hope we all find ourselves in these different universes up against each other.”

“American Gods tells the story of Shadow Moon (Whittle) as he is released from prison after the death of his wife. Upon meeting the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, he becomes the enigmatic man’s bodyguard, but quickly learns of a secret war brewing between the Gods of old mythology and the New Gods of today: money, technology and media. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he learns his employer is one an old Norse god recruiting help for the coming war before they slowly die off.”
American Gods will premiere on Starz on April 30th.
