Oscar Isaac says the Academy Awards’ Popular Film category is “pretty stupid”

August 29, 2018 by Samuel Brace

The Oscar’s newly announced award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film is a “pretty stupid” idea according to Oscar Isaac.

The Academy’s new idea for rewarding more popular films hasn’t gone down particularly well with movie fans and those working in the industry, with many seeing it as patronising.

Oscar Isaac, who has been involved in a big film or two during his time, most notably in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens, isn’t too hot on the idea either, telling USA Today that it seems “pretty stupid”:

“I don’t really understand it. I haven’t read the rules of the thing. It seems pretty dumb, but I guess that’s above my pay grade.

“I don’t really understand what it means. Who accepts the award? What’s the criteria for it? Is it based off of box office? I don’t really get it. But the truth is, I mean, I don’t in general. The reason why people get awards and why they don’t now is already a slippery slope. Another category seems a little meaningless, but maybe not any more than the rest of it is.”

Well, Isaac certainly didn’t hold back with his remarks there and is quite clearly not a fan of the whole awards process in general. It doesn’t sound like the Academy’s proposed new category is going to win him around either.
