Oscars 2022: The Power of the Dog leads nominations for the 94th Academy Awards

February 8, 2022 by Gary Collinson

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has today announced the nominees for the 94th annual Academy Awards, with Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog (Flickering Myth’s #1 movie of 2021) leading the field with 12 nominations overall including Best Picture and Best Director.

The latter is a history-making nomination, with Campion becoming the first woman to receive two Best Director nominations in their career, while she will contest the Best Director Oscar alongside Steven Spielberg, who with West Side Story becomes the first person to be nominated for Best Director in six different decades.

Contesting Best Picture alongside The Power of the Dog and West Side Story are Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, and Nightmare Alley, while Campion and Spielberg are up against Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), Ryúsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) for Best Director.
