Pacific Rim: Uprising pushed back to March

August 3, 2017 by Ricky Church

Originally published August 3, 2017. Updated April 16, 2018.

There has been a little bit of a setback in the release of the sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising. Universal and Legendary announced the film has been pushed back from its February 23rd, 2018 release date to one month later on March 23rd, 2018. No reason for the delay has been given.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is now placed on a pretty busy and competitive weekend. Previously, its release would have been one week after Marvel’s Black Panther hit theaters, but now it will be competing against Robin Hood starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, Gnomeo and Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes and the Johnny Knoxville film Action Point. In addition, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One comes out just a week after that.

The original Pacific Rim was released in 2013 by Guillermo del Toro and starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi. It told the story of the world at war with interdimensional monsters called Kaijus that invade Earth through the Pacific. To protect themselves, mankind created the Jaegers, a program where two people piloted a powerful mechanized robot designed to destroy the Kaijus.

It’s been ten years since The Battle of the Breach and the oceans are still, but restless. Vindicated by the victory at the Breach, the Jaeger program has evolved into the most powerful global defense force in human history. The PPDC now calls upon the best and brightest to rise up and become the next generation of heroes. When the Kaiju threat returns, we will be ready.

Pacific Rim: Uprising sees Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) directing a cast that includes John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Adria Arjona (True Detective), Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Cailee Spaeny (Counting to 1,000), Levi Meaden (Aftermath), Karan Brar (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Nick Tarabay (Spartacus), Zhang Jin (Ip Man 3), Mackenyu (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) and Jing Tian (Police Story: Lockdown), while Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman reprise their roles from the first film. It is set for release on March 23rd 2018.
