Personhood in Video Games? The Philosophy of NPCs

CryMor Gaming presents a look at NPCs…

Non-player characters, or NPCs, have been a staple of video games since arguably Computer Space, the very first video game ever created. You simply cannot have a world without some form of externally-controlled entities- it would make everything feel empty, isolated, and (from a design standpoint) downright lazy.

And yet, there is no set definition when it comes to what defines an NPC, especially in modern gaming. We all associate them with enemy and ally AI, but philosophically speaking there is so much diversity of personalities and variation of categorizations that to put them all under a single generic label seems wrong.
