Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura on a possible G.I. Joe / Transformers movie crossover

March 30, 2013 by admin

With G.I. Joe: Retaliation tracking an impressive $100 million + opening at the global box office this weekend, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing further big-screen adventures for the Real American Heroes, but could that involve a crossover with Paramount Pictures’ other big Hasbro property Transformers? According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura it’s unlikely at this point in time, but he’s not going as far as ruling it out entirely:

“I guess it’s possible. At this moment I [would] resist it,” di Bonaventura told CinemaBlend. “I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other. I don’t rule it out. It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could [make] a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But if I heard a story where we went, ‘Oh my God’… I could see a story about machination, machination of war and that could lead you to a Transformer.”

Should G.I. Joe and Transformers join forces on the big-screen, it won’t be the first time the two properties have crossed over, with the Joes teaming up with the Autobots to battle Cobra and the Decepticons on several occasions in comic book form, beginning with Marvel’s four-issue limited series G.I. Joe and The Transormers in 1987.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is out now in cinemas, with a cast that includes returning G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra stars Channing Tatum (Duke), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Lee Byung-hun (Storm Shadow), Arnold Vosloo (Zartan) and Jonathan Pryce (The US President) and franchise newcomers Dwayne Johnson (Fast & Furious 6) as Roadblock, Bruce Willis (The Expendables 2) as Colonel Joseph Colton, Adrianne Palicki (Red Dawn) as Lady Jaye, Elodie Yung (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Jinx, D.J. Cotrona (Dear John) as Flint and Ray Stevenson (Thor: The Dark World) as Firefly. Read our review here.

On the Transformers front, director Michael Bay is currently prepping Transformers 4, which will see Mark Wahlberg (Pain & Gain) leading an all-new cast of human characters when it opens on June 27th, 2014.
