Liam Neeson shows off his original Star Wars: The Phantom Menace lightsaber

January 15, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Liam Neeson, who starred as Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, has shown off his original lightsaber in a recent interview.

This week we heard from Liam Neeson that he would be up for returning as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show and now the actor has been showing off his original lightsaber from 1999’s The Phantom Menance.

Appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the actor showed off the awesome prop, noting how it was mounted on a plaque that displays the film’s original name ‘Star Wars: The Beginning’:

“This has been to Tatooine and back many, many times. If I turn it this way, it’ll show a certain lightsaber that I used in the film The Phantom Menace. It was originally gonna be called ‘The Beginning’ and it says on it, July-October ’97. So that was my lightsaber as Qui-Gon Jinn, the Jedi Master, just plugging that. So that’s the one.”

Neeson went on to joke about how, prior to the prequel trilogy, fans weren’t privy to how lightsabers ignited, whether it was with a button or perhaps with the force itself: “And everybody thinks, ‘Oh yeah, you turn it on with just your thoughts, right?’ I say, ‘No, it’s a red button. There it is. It’s just a red button.'”

Whether or not we will see Neeson reprise the role of Qui-Gon in live-action again will remain to be seen but anything is possible and the Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi series would be a perfect place to do it.
