Rian Johnson confirms his Star Wars trilogy is still in the works following rumours of cancellation

August 30, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has taken to Twitter to confirm that he is still working on his planned new Star Wars trilogy for Disney and Lucasfilm, shutting down rumours that the films are in trouble and may be facing the axe.

Yup. 👊🏻

— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) August 29, 2018

The original rumour that the trilogy was in trouble came from a report by YouTuber Mike Zeroh, who claimed that “the original concept and idea behind his trilogy seems [to have been] put in the trash right now… it seems Rian Johnson will get at least one movie which is either a spinoff or an open-ended film that may well warrant another two sequels from Lucasfilm.”

Now, it is of course possible that Lucasfilm has decided to commit to just one movie for the time being, particularly in the wake of the mixed reception to The Last Jedi and the disappointing box office returns for Solo. However, with Lucasfilm focussing all of its attention on Star Wars: Episode IX right not, it may be some time before we get any official news on the next wave of Star Wars movies, including Johnson’s projects.
