Rick and Morty to recast all of Justin Roiland’s roles

June 16, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Rick and Morty is beginning to take shape into something very different as we now have confirmation that the series’ production team will look to recast Justin Roiland as they approach the release of the seventh season.

To catch everyone up: Co-creator Justin Roiland recently saw allegations and charges for domestic abuse. Adult Swim then issued a statement, ending the association with the filmmaker, and announced they are still working on the seventh season. In March 2023, the Orange County District Attorney’s office dropped all criminal charges against Roiland due to insufficient evidence.

At the recent Annecy International Festival, co-executive producer Steve Levy and Cartoon Network President Michael Ouweleen addressed the elephant in the room. During the event, they confirm that the process of recasting each of Justin Roiland’s roles in the series has begun.

While not expanding more, they note the situation is much like how “actors have taken on the role of Bugs Bunny over the years.” At the time of writing, a replacement has not been named yet. Production is still underway, and the seventh season has been teased for a planned release sometime this September. None of this has slowed the Rick and Morty team down too much, as there’s already talk of a potential tenth season.

While fans wait for the upcoming season, Rick and Morty: The Anime series is in the works and slated to premiere on Max this Fall.
