Robert Rodriguez stays silent on reports that he is directing an Escape From New York remake

December 13, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Director Robert Rodriguez has neither confirmed nor denied if he will be directing a remake of Escape From New York.

The Kurt Russell led sci-fi thriller is an 80s classic. Directed by John Carpenter, the film has been hugely influential over the years and spawned a sequel in the film Escape From LA. A remake of Escape From New York has been planned for years but so far, nothing has materialised.

In March of 2017, however, it was reported that Robert Rodriguez was onboard as director, news that was never confirmed at the time. Well, during a recent Q&A for his new film Alita: Battle Angel (via Mr H Reviews), someone asked Rodriguez if it was true. Here’s what he said:

“Well, I can’t really say. I’m a huge Escape From New York fan. I like the rumors, I’d love to do Escape From New York. That was the first film that got me interested in filmmaking.”

So no confirmation from Rodriguez but it doesn’t sound like a denial either. What do you think? Will we be seeing an Escape From New York remake from Robert Rodriguez in the coming years?
