Robert Zemeckis’ The Witches rated PG for “scary images/moments”

July 29, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While we may not have a definitive release date for the film as of yet, Robert Zemeckis’ new take on Roald Dahl’s The Witches has been rated PG – the same age rating as the 1990 adaptation directed by Nicolas Roeg.

Recently reported by Bloody Disgusting, Robert Zemeckis’ The Witches has earned its PG rating for “scary images/moments, language and thematic elements.”

The Witches is set to be directed by Zemeckis from a script he’s written alongside Kenya Barris (Black-ish) from an earlier draft by Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water). The film features a cast including Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Chris Rock (Grown Ups), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), Octavia Spencer (Ma), and newcomers Jahzir Kadeem Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick.

Zemeckis’ reimagining of the classic children’s book tells “the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. The boy and his grandmother come across some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, so Grandma wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.”
