Rumour: Rian Johnson to begin shooting the first of his new Star Wars trilogy in June

January 1, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in November it was announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing his very own, brand new Star Wars trilogy, with “all the freedom in the world” to create a story separate from the main Skywalker saga.

Johnson has since said that he’s at the “very beginning” stages of planning the new movies, but if a report from the Daily Record is to be believed, it seems that development may be a little further along than expected.

According to the newspaper, Lucasfilm has earmarked the Rest and Be Thankful, a historic pass between Loch Long and Loch Awe, as a location for the first of the new movies, and is looking to shoot scenes there and at other locations around Scotland beginning in June of this year.

Now, it’s possible that the report is simply speculation, or the outlet could be confusing the Rian Johnson movie with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX, which is expected to start shooting in June ahead of a December 2019 release.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) as Vice Admiral Holdo.
