Rumour: Stargirl series could move from DC Universe to The CW

October 21, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It seems that The CW could be set to add yet another DC property to its ever-increasing roster of superhero shows, as Collider’s Jeff Sneider is claiming that the upcoming DC Universe series Stargirl may be set to make the move to the network.

According to Sneider, should the series shift to The CW, the episodes would need to be re-edited to fit with the network’s broadcast standards, although “uncut episodes could make their way onto HBO Max down the line”.

While Sneider stresses that the rumour is unconfirmed at present, it’s worth nothing that things have been very quiet on the Stargirl front since the release of a first-look image back in March. That may not be too unusual given that it isn’t slated to premiere until next year, but there’s been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of DC Universe following the abrupt cancellation of Swamp Thing and the impending launch of Warner Media’s new streaming service HBO Max, and this report is sure to add to that.

Stargirl has been created by Geoff Johns and is set to reimagine the Justice Society of America, the world’s very first superhero team, with Brec Bassinger taking on the lead role of high schooler-turned-superhero Courtney Whitmore. Should it make the jump to DC Universe, it will join the likes of The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman and Black Lightning, along with the upcoming Arrow spinoff starring Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy.

Stargirl will follow the story of Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) who is a smart, athletic and above all else kind girl. This high school teenager’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. “Borrowing” the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.

Featuring in the cast of Stargirl alongside Brec Bassinger are Amy Smart (Justified) as Barbara Whitmore, Luke Wilson (Roadies) as Pag Dugan, Trae Romano (Robbie) as Pat Dugan, Joel McHale (Community) as Starman, Lou Ferrigno Jr. (S.W.A.T.) as Hourman, Brian Stapf (The Walking Dead) as Wildcat, Henry Thomas (The Haunting of Hill House) as Dr. Mid-Nite, Joy Osmanski (The Santa Clarita Diet) as Tigress, Neil Hopkins (Matador) as Sportsmaster, Nelson Lee (Mulan) as Dragon King, Meg DeLacey (The Fosters) as Cindy Burman, and Anjelika Washington (Young Sheldon), Yvette Monreal (Matador), Christopher James Baker (True Detective), Neil Jackson (Westworld), Hunter Sansone (Drama Drama) and Jake Austin Walker (Rectify) in undisclosed roles.
