Deadline has revealed that Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) is set to produce and star in Project Hail Mary, an adaptation of The Martian author Andy Weir’s upcoming sci-fi novel of the same name.
Project Hail Mary won’t hit book shelves until spring 2021, but the novel is already in high demand with MGM in talks to produce the film. The plot revolves around “a solitary tale of an astronaut on a space ship who is tasked with saving the planet.” The book will be published by Penguin Random House.
Weir’s first novel The Martian was a bestseller and later adapted by Ridley Scott with Matt Damon leading the film as an astronaut stranded on Mars. Weir’s follow up novel, Artemis, has an adaptation currently in development with Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse) directing. The pair are also working on another idea from Weir based upon the graphic novel Chesire Crossing.
