Ryan Reynolds confirms PG-13 rating for Deadpool, tells fans “zero need to panic”

April 1, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Bad news for some Deadpool fans. Despite fighting tooth and nail to get the fan-preferred R rating for his Deadpool film, Ryan Reynolds has taken to Twitter to confirm that the film will have a PG-13 rating when it’s released next year.

A PG-13 #deadpool will still have 4th wall breaking, a shit-ton of action and at least 3 chimichangas. Zero need to panic. I promise.

— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) April 1, 2015

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld had previously spoke about the script, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, was on paper a R-rated film, and would need to some “toning down” to get it anywhere close to a PG-13. But money talks in Hollywood, and 20th Century Fox are to some degree protecting their somewhat risky investment, with a PG-13 obviously meaning more bums on seats come its opening.

The news is sure to irk many of the fans of the character with promise of a “toned down” version, but with Reynolds and director Tim Miller on board, Deadpool is still certain to be as close to the “perfect” fan version that a PG-13 rating will allow. Besides which, we are lucky to be getting the film in the first place, so let’s be thankful for that for now.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is set for release on February 12th 2016, with Reynolds reprising the role of Deadpool alongside T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Weasel, Morena Baccarin (Gotham) as Copycat, Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) as Angel Dust, newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
