Ryan Reynolds talks Deadpool, says the “debate rages on” over PG-13 or R rating

March 24, 2015 by Gary Collinson

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his new film Woman in Gold, Ryan Reynolds offered up some comments on the long-gestating Deadpool movie, which is finally about to go into production after years of development hell.

“It’s just how unusual he is,” said Reynolds when asked about the appeal of the character. “You understand why there was trepidation to make the movie early on? Because it’s a really difficult character to put up on the screen for the studio. He’s a character that’s aware he’s in a film, he’s aware that he breaks the fourth wall. I mean, he does certain things that are unlike anything else in the X-Men Universe yet he is a part of the X-Men Universe. So it makes it a little challenging, I think, to find a way. He’s so popular—the comic book alone [is] one of the most popular selling comic books of all time so it’s exiting to be here shooting it. We don’t have the budget that most X-Men movies do. In the super hero world, this would be considered an independent film.”

One of the big debates surrounding Deadpool is whether Fox and director Tim Miller will deliver an R-rated version of the Merc with the Mouth, and while previous talk has suggested that they’ll play it safe with PG-13, Reynolds has revealed that a final decision is yet to be made, stating: “That debate rages on. We’ll see.”

Deadpool is set for release on February 12th 2016, with Reynolds joined in the cast by T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Weasel, Morena Baccarin (Gotham) as Copycat, Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) as Angel Dust and Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
