Sam Mendes’ 1917 takes top prize at the 2020 PGA Awards

January 19, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Sam Mendes’ 1917 received a major boost in terms of its Best Picture hopes at the Oscars last night with the Producers Guild of America bestowing its top honour, The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, on the World War I epic at the 30th annual PGA Awards.

Throughout its history, the Producers Guild has correctly predicted the Academy Award for Best Picture 21 times, including last year’s Green Book and 2018’s The Shape of Water. This year’s PGA nominations included all nine Best Picture nominees – Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite – along with Knives Out.

Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4 received the award for Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures, while on the TV side of things there were more wins for Fleabag, Succession and Chernobyl; check out the full list of winners here…
