San Diego Comic-Con 2013 – Thursday Highlights

July 19, 2013 by admin

We round up Thursday’s big talking points and best coverage from around the web of the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International, including Ender’s Game, Divergent, Oldboy, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sherlock, Dracula, Teen Wolf, The X-Files, Firefly, Batman: Arkham Origins, The Walking Dead, The Superior Spider-Man and Dexter….

…After opening the convention floor to press on Wednesday evening, the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International got underway proper yesterday and the big highlight for movie fans was Summit Entertainment’s Hall H presentation, which included panels for Gavin Hood’s (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) forthcoming adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, as well as another upcoming book adaptation, the action-thriller Divergent, headlined by former Mary Jane Watson Shailene Woodley (The Descendants). Head on over to Collider for recaps on both panels [here and here], while the Ender’s Game panel coincided with the release of six character posters for Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Harrison Ford (Star Wars), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Viola Davis (The Help) and Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones), as well as a new clip and viral video which you can see here…

…Not wanting to be left out of all the Comic-Con excitement, FilmDistrict released a new banner for Oldboy, director Spike Lee’s forthcoming remake of Chan-wook Park’s cult 2003 revenge thriller…

…On Saturday 20th Century Fox will showcase two of its big upcoming releases in The Wolverine and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and it seems we can also add X-Men: Days of Future Past to that list, if the release of the official logo, a Trask Industries viral site, and cast photos of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Colossus (Daniel Cudmore) and Bishop (Omar Sy) are any indication [check them all out here]. Oh, and there’s also the small matter of a Trask Industries display, which gave us our first look at the head of one of the movie’s robotic mutant-killers, the Sentinels…

…On the TV front, Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) recoded a video introduction to the hotly-anticipated Sherlock panel, which was attended by producers Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue; you can check out the video intro below, while SlashFilm have a rundown of the panel itself…

…To build anticipation for the unveiling of a new Comic-Con exclusive trailer this Saturday, NBC and Sky Living released seven character posters from the forthcoming ten-part miniseries Dracula, which sees Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) leading the cast as Bram Stoker’s iconic creation; check out the Dracula poster below, and see here for the other six…

……During the Teen Wolf panel, it was announced that the show would return for the second half of its third season beginning January 6th, 2014, while the cast and crew also dropped a new trailer for the remaining five episodes of season 3A which seemed to leave fans of the hit MTV series howling with excitement…

…David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and creator Chris Carter were on hand for a special 20th anniversary celebration of The X-Files, with much of the talk naturally centering around the possibility of further adventures for FBI Agents Mulder and Scully. Carter remained coy with his response, stating that “you need a reason for going on and getting excited” and while Gillian Anderson admitted that “a [third] film would be great” she also went on to shoot down the possibility of the show returning for a limited series, a la the upcoming 24: Live Another Day. Head on over to The Hollywood Reporter for a full write-up of the panel…

…Browncoats clamouring for more Firefly have got their wish – kind of – with Fox announcing the release of the MMO “multi-user social role playing game” Firefly Online, which is being developed by Spark Plug Games, the company behind Puzzle Quest 2. Here’s the announcement trailer for the upcoming mobile game…

…Firefly Online wasn’t the only video game trailer to drop yesterday, with WB Games Montreal releasing a new look at the hotly-anticipated Batman: Arkham Origins, the prequel to the bestselling Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Newsarama has details of the full panel, and you can check out the new Origins trailer here…

…The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman took part in a Q&A to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the comic book, during which he discussed everything from character deaths to future webisodes, his involvement with the TV series, and the differences between the comic and the show. Head over to IGN for a recap of the Q&A, which obviously contains a few spoilers…

…During The Superior Spider-Man panel, it was announced that Otto Octavius’ web-slinger will come face-to-face with Venom in an arc entitled ‘Dying Wish’, which gets underway in Superior Spider-Man #22 this November. Newsarama has a recap of the panel, while Marvel has also given us a look at the cover by Humberto Ramos…

…And finally, with the final eight and final season of Dexter now underway, the cast and crew gathered in Hall H one last time where Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jennifer Carpenter (Deb), Desmond Harrington (Quinn), David Zayas (Angel), Aimee Garcia (Jamie), Yvonne Strahovski (Hannah) and former stars Lauren Velez (LaGuerta), Julie Benz (Rita) and Erik King (Doakes) said an emotional farewell to Comic-Con; take a look…

Well, that’s about it for Thursday, but today should bring plenty more excitement with highlights including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Kick-Ass 2, Riddick, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Marvel’s Cup O’ Joe, DC’s Trinity War and New 52, and the world premieres of Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and the latest Marvel One-Shot Agent Carter.
