Scarlett Johansson talks Black Widow and Avengers: Age of Ultron

February 17, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In the build up to the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, we’ve heard on several occasions that Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff will play a primary role in the hotly-anticpated Marvel sequel.

Judging by her scenes in the first trailer, it looks like we’ll be delving into the Black Widow’s backstory somewhat, and Johansson has confirmed as much during an interview with W Magazine (via CBM), during which she briefly spoke about her character:

“People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine. But I loved Iron Man, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible. I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past. I think of her that way. Black Widow is a superhero, but she’s also human. She’s small, but she’s strong. It’s hard not to admire her.”

Are you excited to learn more about Black Widow’s backstory?

Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release in the UK on April 23rd and North America on May 1st, with Joss Whedon directing a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Paul Bettany (JARVIS / The Vision), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), James Spader (Ultron), Thomas Kretschmann (Baron Strucker), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Claudia Kim (Dr. Cho) and Andy Serkis (Uylsses Klaw).
