Kevin Feige on The Hulk and Black Widow’s roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Phase Three

October 29, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday Marvel Studios announced its line-up for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with sequels Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the two-part Avengers: Infinity War set to be joined by new franchises Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Inhumans.

Despite persistent speculation, there was no room for a second solo movie for The Incredible Hulk, nor the long-rumoured Black Widow solo movie. However, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has promised that both characters will have important roles to play in the upcoming slate of movies.

“[Hulk] is going to appear in many of the movies announced today,” states Feige (via Newsarama). “[Black Widow] couldn’t be more important as an Avenger, but like Hulk the Avengers films will be the films where they play a primary role. [Her role in Age of Ultron] is very, very big and further develops her character. The plans we have for her through the rest of the Avengers saga are very big and she is a linchpin, in fact, to those films. So instead of taking her out there or doing a prequel which we haven’t done yet, we’re continuing the forward momentum of the continuity of the Cinematic Universe, of which Widow is a key part. Part of the fun of Avengers: Age of Ultron was saying, ‘you’ve seen another Iron Man adventure, you see another Thor adventure and another Cap adventure, but we haven’t seen the Green Goliath again. So that was important in the characters you haven’t seen – Hulk being one of them and Hawkeye being one of them – Ultron will make up for it.”

Are you disappointed that The Incredible Hulk and Black Widow didn’t get solo movies in Phase Three, or are they better suited as part of an ensemble?
