Scott Bakula says talks underway over Quantum Leap reboot

September 25, 2021 by Gary Collinson

According to original star Scott Bakula, Dr. Sam Beckett could be returning to the small screen for more time-travelling adventures with the actor telling Bob Saget that “very significant conversions” are taking place regarding a Quantum Leap reboot or revival.

“There’s very significant conversations about it right now going on,” said Bakula, who starred in the original series for five seasons during its run on NBC between 1989 and 1993. ““I don’t know what it would be, I don’t know who would have it. The rights were a mess for years. I don’t know if they’re even sorted out now. That’s always been the biggest complication.”

Bakula went on to state that he’s spoken to creator Donald P. Bellisario about a potential reboot or revival on several occasions over the years, and that “He would always say, ‘I can’t write it without thinking of you and Dean Stockwell.’ I said, ‘Just think about me and Dean and write your show. Get it out there. If you have an idea, just write it. I am sure it will be great.’ I don’t know what that idea would be if we did.”

Quantum Leap starred Bakula as Sam Beckett, a physicist involuntarily “leaping” through spacetime and temporarily taking the place of others to put right what once went wrong, aided by his best friend Al (Stockwell), who appears to him as a hologram from his present.

After NBC opted against a sixth season, the show ended on a cliffhanger of sorts with a title card announcing that “Dr. Sam Becket [sic] never returned home.” Some thirty years later, might that be about to change? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth if you’d be keen to see a Quantum Leap revival, or even a reboot of the cult series…
