Second Chances expansion arrives for Prison Architect

June 16, 2021 by Andrew Newton

The fifth expansion for prison management simulator Prison Architect is now available on PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.  Titled Second Chances, this latest expansion allows prison governors to begin reforming the inmates so they can interact better with society once back out on the streets.  Also released is The Pen, a free content update that introduces new features for all.  See more of Second Chances can be seen below….

Second Chances gives players the chance to start rehabilitating prisoners and lowering rates of reoffending by introducing a number of non-work programs such as Animal Therapy, Meet & Greet and Former Prison Classes.  These can help prisoners lose negative traits and improve behaviours.  There’s also the opportunity for players to set up vendors to those inmates who have earned work credentials, which can be gained from work and participating in training programs.  These fellows will be able to sell to both visitors and other prisoners in inmate run rooms such as a bakery and a Therapy room.

Those inmates who show exceptionally positive behaviours can have their sentences reduced, although should their behaviour take a dive then the sentence can be increased.  Prisoners who have gone through these reform programs can be released but the player is subject to a fine should the ex-con become a con’ once again.

The Pen free update introduces Custom Intake, which allows players a tad more flexibility with scheduling and restricting prisoner intake.  There’s also the arrival of Narcotics Search, which will see K-9 units and their handlers searching for drugs using the Shakedown and Tunnel Search options.  Other additions with this update include:

  • Reception Quick Room.
  • Staff Keys Policy.
  • Construct outdoor rooms.
  • Allowing prisoners to use recreational facilities during their free time.
  • Additional Objects.

The Second Chances DLC is available now on PC (via Paradox Plaza, Steam, GOG, Origin), Xbox One and Playstation 4 now with a 10% discount until 22nd June.  Nintendo Switch players will be able to take part in rehabilitating crims on 29th June.

Steam gamers yet to purchase Prison Architect can take advantage of a 75% Total Lockdown bundle, this includes the base game, Psych Ward: Warden’s Edition, Island Bound, Going Green and Second Chances.  Be quick though, this deal only lasts until 24th June.
