Serinda Swan discusses Medusa’s hair in Marvel’s Inhumans

July 14, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Although we’re still a couple of months away from the premiere of Marvel’s Inhumans, the ABC and IMAX series has already come in for plenty of criticism, with one of the main targets being Serinda Swan’s Medusa – or more specifically, Medusa’s hair.

In the comic books, Medusa’s signature trait is her prehensile hair, which she can elongate and use to lift heavy objects, as well as attack and defend herself. So far, all we’ve seen from the TV incarnation is a rather unconvincing wig, but Swan has revealed to Screen Rant that we will see her using her powers through a combination of practical and CGI effects.

“It’s a hairy situation,” said Swan. “I think I’m going to say that several times. One of the cool things with Medusa obviously is her hair and learning how to use it through the wig, but then also through the CGI. So there are moments where you are in fights or intense situations and you have to know how to use your face at the same time that you are using your hair, so there has been a lot of really amazing scenes where I have to sit down and go, ‘Okay. If it was my arm, how would I do it if it was my arm? What would my face do?’ And then have the duality between the two because it’s sort of another appendage for her.”

“You will definitely see her hair have moods.,” she continues. “There will be some moody hair. You know because that’s her! You know, it’s the same when you are in an argument, your fists curl. When you are like meeting someone and you’re nervous, your hands sweat. It’s her. And it is all of that. And it’s a little less when she is out in public because she is like, ‘ I am queen.’ because it would be slightly distracting if I’m doing, if I was like this during the whole interview, you guys would be like, ‘What is going on?’So she controls it when she is out in public, but you’ll see a much more intimate side with her and her hair with Black Bolt.”

Marvel’s Inhumans explores the never-before-told epic adventure of the royal family including Black Bolt, the enigmatic, commanding King of the Inhumans, with a voice so powerful that the slightest whisper can destroy a city. After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself.

Inhumans will premiere in IMAX theaters on September 1st, with a two-week run for the first two episodes, before the full eight episodes air on ABC from September 29th. Featuring in the cast of the series are Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Mike Moh as Triton, Sonya Balmores as Auran, Henry Ian Cusick as Dr. Evan Declan and Ellen Woglom and Chad James Buchanan as as-yet-unrevealed characters.
