Showrunner confirms Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot will focus on a new Slayer

July 27, 2018 by Matt Rodgers

One of the biggest pieces of news to emerge from the Hellmouth of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the fact that Warner Bros. confirmed that they were to reboot Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This brought with it an understandable level of consternation from a fanbase who cherished the adventures of Buffy Summers for seven seasons, running between 1997 and 2003, and deemed it unnecessary to retell a story so brilliantly told first time around.

Well, it seems that the new showrunner, Monica Owusu-Breen (Alias) is as big of a fan as anyone, and has taken to Twitter to reassure people that this return trip to Sunnydale will focus on a “new slayer”.

“For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan,” writers Owusu-Breen. “For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay. There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel … They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, 20 years later … and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer … And that’s all I can say.”

So there you have it, it seems that Owusu-Breen will adhere to the lore set out by the show’s opening monologue, that “In every generation there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer” and this time she won’t be Buffy.
