Sigourney Weaver on The Defenders’ Alexandra: “She’s a heroine”

July 31, 2017 by Jordan Jones

The Defenders is only a few weeks away, but there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the series’ main antagonist Alexandra. Netflix, and Sigourney Weaver herself, have offered up clues as to who she is. Is she connected to the Hand? In the trailer released at Comic-Con, we see her with Elektra. Some fans think she will pull a “John Harrison”, and end up being a completely different character altogether.

However, one thing we DO know is that Alexandra does not view herself as the villain in The Defenders. At the San Diego Comic-Con, Sigourney Weaver sat down for a chat with Cinema Blend and gave some insight into the psychology of her character:

“I was doing an interview earlier and I kept referring to her as a heroine, which to me is like another word for woman character. I said I think she does feel it in her story like she’s a heroine, because she doesn’t see things as black and white. She sees all the different colors and possibilities because she’s in business. And I don’t think businesspeople, especially on her scale, care about these niceties of things. If it’s a fossil fuel company, they want to just keep going, regardless of all these people whimpering about the earth. So I based her on real people I know who think like that.”

One of the strongest aspects of Netflix’s Marvel series has been the complex characters. The best villains seem to live somewhere in the grey, and hopefully Alexandra will prove a compelling villain when all of the mystique is gone.

“Marvel’s The Defenders” follows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. A quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

The Defenders will hit Netflix on August 18th 2017, with Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Scott Glenn (Stick), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing) and Elodie Yung (Elektra) appearing alongside Sigourney Weaver as the villain, Alexandra.
