Simon Kinberg on possibly directing X-Men: Supernova, Nicholas Hoult thinks he’ll return as Beast

February 25, 2017 by Gary Collinson

A few days ago it was reported that Simon Kinberg is being lined up to make his directorial debut on the next instalment in the main franchise, X-Men: Supernova. Coming Soon caught up with Kinberg this week and asked him about the report, but the writer and producer was keeping his cards very close to his chest and giving very little away.

“They didn’t announce it, somebody broke a story about it that’s premature, but we have been talking about what the next X-Men movie would be since post-production on the last X-Men movie. We are prepping the film, can’t say much more than that, but we’re excited to get back into telling the story of the mainland X-Men.”

Asked hypothetically what he feels his directing style would be, Kinberg responded: “I’ve had the good fortune of working with a lot of good directors, from Bryan Singer to Ridley Scott to Sir Kenneth Branagh, and I’ve also had the opportunity to work with directors that aren’t as good and I learned a lot of lessons from those directors as well. I really like my job, I really like writing and producing movies. If that was my job for the rest of my life I’d be a very lucky man. My directorial style would probably be very similar to my writing and producing style, which is very collaborative.”

So far, the only cast member to officially confirm their involvement with X-Men: Supernova is Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), although James McAvoy dropped a strong hint that he’ll be reprising the role of Professor X, and now Nicholas Hoult has said he expects to return as Beast.

“I think I’m involved,” Hoult tells HeyUGuys. “I’d be happy to go back – I love playing that character and I love everyone involved and I know there’s one in the works…”

X-Men: Supernova is slated to go into production this summer, and if rumours are to be believed, Fox will be taking a second crack at adapting the classic Dark Phoenix storyline.
