Sony keeps things short with Morbius running time

January 2, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Sony Pictures bucked the trend of increasingly lengthy blockbuster running times with last year’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and it seems the studio will be doing so once again this month when Jared Leto’s Living Vampire is unleashed with the release of the Marvel movie Morbius.

Yes, the dust hasn’t even started to settle on Spider-Man: No Way Home as it continues to rip up the box office, but we’re already less than four weeks away from the launch of the 2022 superhero season and Collider is reporting that the latest chapter in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe clocks in at 1 hour and 48 minutes.

Morbius’ running time is 18 minutes longer than Sony’s Venom sequel, which opted for a swift 90 minutes, but it’s almost three-quarters of an hour shorter than Spider-Man: No Way Home. A refreshing change for those who prefer their movies sub-two hours now and again (we’ll be surprised if any of 2022’s other superhero movies come in any shorter), but let’s just hope it’s enough time to introduce the character and do the story justice…

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

Morbius sees Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) directing a cast that includes Jared Leto (Suicide Squad) as Dr. Michael Morbius, Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising) as Martine Bancroft, Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Loxias Crown, Jared Harris (The Terror) as Morbius’ mentor, Michael Keaton (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as The Vulture and Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious) as an FBI agent.

Morbius is set for release on January 28th.
