Sophie Turner says X-Men: Dark Phoenix is “such a departure” from X-Men: Apocalypse

July 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this year 20th Century Fox announced that it has pushed back the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix to February 2019, with director Simon Kinberg and the cast set to reunite later this year for a round of reshoots.

Speaking to Digital Spy, actress Sophie Turner – who portrays Jean Grey/The Phoenix – played down the extent of the reshoots, stating that: “I think it’s just a few bits and bobs, reshoot-wise. To be honest, I don’t even know what we’re reshooting at the moment. So I couldn’t really tell you much about that one.”

Turner also echoed previous comments from her cast mates that Dark Phoenix will place a much greater emphasis on character and drama, and that its tone is “such a departure” from 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

“This movie is kind of a lot more emotion-based, much more grounded. There are, of course, those supernatural elements, but this one is really character-driven – a really emotional story about a girl battling with a deadly mix of mental health problems and being a superhero. “It’s a movie about struggle and abandonment and not knowing yourself. Yeah, an internal struggling. It’s so, so interesting. It’s such a departure from the last movie.”
