After a bumper opening weekend which saw it topping the North American box office with a record-breaking six day opening of $185 million, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home has now pushed its worldwide box office beyond the $600 million mark.
The Marvel and Sony co-production began its international rollout in three markets last weekend, before adding a further 63 international markets throughout the week including $33.8 million from South Korea, $17.8 million from the UK, $13.9 million from Mexico and $12 million from Australia.
Given this stellar start, it looks very likely that Far From Home will go on to top $1 billion globally – a figure which, if unconfirmed rumours from industry newsletter The Ankler is to be believed, is the amount that the sequel needs to gross in order to extend Marvel Studios’ deal with Sony and prevent full control of the Spider-Man character from reverting back to the latter.
With Spider-Man: Far From Home’s figures, the MCU has now also taken its cumulative box office gross beyond $22 billion worldwide, with an astonishing per-movie average of $960 million across its 23 releases.
