Star Trek: Discovery continues its behind-the-scenes shake-up for season 2

July 2, 2018 by Gary Collinson

A couple of weeks ago, CBS announced that Star Trek: Discovery showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts had been fired from the series midway through production on the second season, with executive producer Alex Kurtzman stepping up as their replacement.

Deadline is now reporting that as part of the shake-up, The Closer creator James Duff has boarded the series as an executive producer and will assist Kurtzman in running the writers room. Duff does have previous experience with the franchise, having penned an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.

In addition, writer Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married) has been promoted from consulting producer to co-executive producer, while Olatunde Osunsanmi has been upped from co-executive producer to executive producer and will serve as the producer/director on set in Toronto.

As well as showrunning Star Trek: Discovery for its second season, Kurtzman has been tapped by CBS to expand its Star Trek franchise, with three new shows reportedly in development including a Star Trek: The Next Generation sequel featuring the return of Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard.
