The Star Wars franchise has now passed Harry Potter at the global box office

January 2, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Harry Potter is one of the most lucrative movie franchises of all time but Star Wars has now moved past it in terms of global box office numbers.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has divided fans but has till garnered a massive box office taking in just a few weeks. It’s now $1 billion plus global haul has added to the 10 film Star Wars franchise’s total box office figure of $8.55 billion (via Star Wars News Net).

This number puts the film just past the Harry Potter franchise which has to date earned $8.53 billion via its nine movies. The franchise will add to its number this autumn when Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald arrives in cinemas but Star Wars isn’t slowing down either.

Not only does The Last Jedi have plenty of legs in it yet, but Solo: A Star Wars Story will hit cinemas this may, before Episode IX arrives in December 2019.

Star Wars isn’t the highest grossing franchise in history, however, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its 17 films is still out in first place with $13.5 billion.

These figures, of course, are not adjusted for inflation.
