Star Wars: The Force Awakens enters the all-time top ten at the global box office

Having pushed its worldwide haul to $1.161 billion, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now overtaken this year’s Despicable Me spinoff Minions to enter the all time top ten at the global box office, doing so in record time.

The Force Awakens is currently sitting in tenth place and is closing in fast on Marvel’s Iron Man 3, which earned $1.215 billion back in 2013. It has also entered the all-time top five domestically, having earned $571 million in North America by close of play on Monday.

Here’s the all time top ten as it currently stands:

1. Avatar (2009): $2.78bn
2. Titanic (1997): $2.186bn
3. Jurassic World (2015): $1.669bn
4. The Avengers (2012): $1.518bn
5. Fast & Furious 7 (2015): $1.515bn
6. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015): $1.4bn
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011): $1.341bn
8. Frozen (2013): $1.276bn
9. Iron Man 3 (2013): $1.215bn
10. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015): $1.161bn

UPDATE: Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now overtaken Iron Man 3 to climb to ninth place with $1.228 billion.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens sees J.J. Abrams directing returning stars Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), in addition to Adam Driver (Girls), Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year), Andy Serkis (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley (Silent Witness), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Ken Leung (Lost), Miltos Yerolemou (Game of Thrones), Max von Sydow (The Exorcist), Jessica Henwick (Spirit Warriors), Christina Chong (24: Live Another Day), Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and newcomers Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen.
