Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker VFX supervisor explains thinking behind behind Leia scenes

February 5, 2020 by Samuel Brace

A VFX supervisor for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has explained the thinking behind Carrie Fisher’s Leia scenes.

One of the most intriguing aspects about Episode IX going in was how they would utilise the late Carrie Fisher and somehow incorporate Leia into the film. Via some old, unused footage and clever VFX, they managed to do a pretty incredible job, keeping the character not only relevant but integral to the plot.

VFX supervisor for the film Roger Guyett, has broken down the mindset he and the team had for bringing Leia to life in an interview with Vanity Fair:

“When you watch the movie you just want to believe that Carrie’s there, and it’s just completely natural within the scene. Basing it around the performances that she’d given us previously was the key. We often used motion control. You’ll notice that she has a different hairstyle, she’s wearing different wardrobe, all of those things. I always thought, when we were doing these shots, that everyone’s looking at her face. That was the thing that we held onto, and then we fixed everything else.”
